THE PREVALENCE OF CEPHALALGIA ON PACIENTS WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER IN SALVADOR, BAHIA

Abstract

Introduction: The bipolar disorder has a great potential to become an incapacitating illness for its carriers on both subtypes (I and II), this disease carries within itself a large amount of comorbidities and among them cephalalgia can be found. Methods: This study was performed on the ambulatory for humor disorders of the institution through a questionnaire applied by an interviewer. Comorbidities and life habits. The main question was formulated in order to establish the prevalence of cephalalgia on patients. That being said, patients were asked if headaches were frequent on their day to day life, appearing on daily basis and having a meaningful impact on their lives or if it only usually appeared as a rare event. Results: 43 patients were analyzed, 12 of them being male and 31 being females. Between those individuals the prevalence of cephalalgia among the carriers of bipolar disorder was 65%. Discussion: Methanalysis revealed a prevalence amid 27 and 34,5% of migraine on patients with bipolar disorder. In the broad spectrum of cephalalgia, other types of headache can be found on patients with humor disorders. Thereby the percentage of 65% that was found complements this data, considering many kinds of cephalalgia and both of its possible origins, primary and secondary.
