SUICÍDIO NO BRASIL: UM RETRATO DE 2004 A 2014

Abstract


The aim of this paper is to describe suicide in Brazil and State of Bahia among the years of 2004 and 2014; to present different definitions of suicide by many thinkers; to show suicide’s act growth in Brazil and it’s probable explanations; present association between suicide and mental disorders, specially with depression, important disease which grows day by day; discussion and analysis of determinants that could lead to suicide attempt and suicide itself; discussion and analysis of this complex and multidimensional phenomenon. Method: Data on all suicides between 2004 and 2014 were collected and coded according to the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems ICD-10 as code X60.0, which correspond to suicide or self-inflicted injurie. Articles from Scielo and Pubmed databases were selected. Readings were also used in some specialized books on the subject. Discussion: Suicide has been growing in Brazil in the past 10 years, affecting men and women, all age groups, specially those who are able to work. Literature shows that exists relation between gender and suicide’s incidence. It also shows that economic stressors are related with self-harm injuries. Conclusion: Suicide is a huge public health problem, which needs society discussion and a better attention from public authorities, so we can have less victims and lower statistics of suicide.
