NEOPLASIAS DO SISTEMA NERVOSO CENTRAL NA INFÂNCIA: NOVAS PERSPECTIVAS E ABORDAGENS

Benicio Oton de Lima

Abstract

Central nervous tumors in children are heterogeneous. In recent years, there was an increased survival due to developments in diagnosis, surgical treatment, oncology treatment and rehabilitation. New magnetic resonance imaging techniques including perfusion, diffusion, spectroscopy, and functional magnetic resonance allow a better assessment of the tumor. The surgical treatment became more efficient by the use of new technologies, neurophysiologic monitoring and ways of tumor identification during surgery. The greatest breakthrough is happening in knowledge of the molecular biology of different tumors, so they are better classified, we can expect for specific treatment for different biomolecular targets. Radiotherapy is effective, and new techniques aid to control the tumor with less damage to normal brain tissue.
